The dunes are very, very large!
The dunes at Jocky's Ridge State Park is the tallest natural dune system in the Eastern part of the United States. The dunes are constantly changing and moving.
Running the Dunes
One of the most fun things to do is run up and down the dunes (to be sure, running down is a lot more fun than running up!) The sand is soft, so if you fall is doesn't hurt that much. It is free to walk, run and jump around the dunes.
A fun activity offered (for a fee) at the dunes is hang gliding. Large, soft sandy areas with lots of wind make this a great place to learn hang gliding. Kitty Hawk Kites, located across the street from Jocky's Ridge, is one of the primary hang gliding schools.
