While you might be one of the more than 3000 people who climb all the way to the top Matterhorn, the rest of us are deeply satisfied with a gondola trip to Glacier Palace which offers high and commanding views of the fabled mountain.
Leaving from Zermatt you can take a tram to the top. This is the highest cable car station in Europe (3,883 m). The view from the cable car alone is worth the ticket!
At the top you can enjoy:
- Skiing -- literally 365 days a year!
- Fantastic views
- A great restaurant (again with hard to beat views)
As if this wasn't enough, you can also hike inside the glacier!
An elevator carries visitors below the surface of the glacier to a fairy-tale palace deep under the perennial snows. An ice tunnel leads through the glacier to sites such as a glacier crevasse and an ice toboggan run. There are ice benches, ice sculptures, and ice artwork!
This is nicely followed by a steaming hot chocolate back up at the restaurant!
